We were recently contacted by a client in Howdon who needed a full house clearance following the passing of their elderly aunt. The two-bedroom terraced home had been occupied for over 50 years and contained a mix of sentimental keepsakes, everyday household items, and some unexpected antiques. The family wanted to ensure that anything valuable was identified, while the rest of the items were either donated or removed responsibly.
Client’s Requirements
-
Complete house clearance, including attic and garden shed
-
Identification and fair appraisal of antiques and collectibles
-
Responsible disposal of any unsalvageable items
-
Donation of usable furniture and household goods to charity
-
Clearance to be completed in a single day
The Clearance Process
Bedrooms & Living Room
The bedrooms contained a range of mid-century furniture, including a teak dressing table, an oak chest of drawers, and a pair of bedside cabinets. The chest of drawers was a particularly fine piece, which we purchased, while the bedside cabinets and dressing table were donated to a local charity.
In the living room, we discovered a set of 1950s ceramic vases, a vintage clock, and a collection of silver-plated cutlery. The client agreed to sell the more valuable items, while the cutlery set was kept for sentimental reasons.
Additionally, we found a well-preserved 1960s record player alongside a stack of vinyl records, including some rare jazz and rock albums. After assessing their value, we purchased several of the records, while the record player was donated to a local community project.
Kitchen & Attic
The kitchen was filled with vintage glassware and a complete 1970s tea set. Some of the glassware had decorative etched patterns, making them desirable to collectors, so we offered to purchase them. The tea set was in perfect condition and was donated to a charity shop.
The attic contained a number of storage boxes, which had been untouched for decades. We uncovered an old typewriter, a collection of wartime letters, and a hand-stitched quilt. The family decided to keep the letters and quilt but opted to sell the typewriter.
Garden Shed & Garage
The garden shed housed a mix of tools, gardening equipment, and an antique wooden wheelbarrow. The tools were in good condition and were donated, while the wheelbarrow, due to its craftsmanship and age, was purchased.
The garage contained an assortment of car-related items, including a vintage oil can, an old mechanic’s toolbox, and a set of wrought iron brackets. These items were appraised, and the client agreed to sell them.
