We were recently called to Longhoughton, Northumberland, to clear a three-bedroom cottage that had been in the same family for generations. The property had belonged to an elderly gentleman who had moved into assisted living, and his relatives needed everything cleared to prepare the house for sale. They wanted to ensure that any valuable antiques were identified, sentimental items were put aside for the family, and that as much as possible was donated to charity rather than being sent to landfill.
Client’s Requirements
-
A full house clearance, including the attic, garage, and garden shed
-
Identification of any high-value or historically significant items
-
Sorting and setting aside sentimental family belongings
-
Donating as many items as possible to charity
The House Clearance Process
Main Living Areas & Bedrooms
The living room contained a large Victorian display cabinet, which housed an assortment of vintage ceramics, silver-plated cutlery, and a collection of old glass bottles. We carefully sorted through these items and found several valuable porcelain pieces, including a Royal Doulton figurine and a pair of 19th-century Staffordshire dogs.
The bedrooms contained a mixture of mid-century furniture, vintage suitcases, and old framed photographs. One of the wardrobes held a collection of old military medals, which we set aside for the family, as they were of great sentimental value.
Kitchen & Dining Room
In the kitchen, we discovered a set of well-preserved 1950s Pyrex dishes, a solid oak dining table with chairs, and an old cast iron scale with brass weights. The dining area also had a vintage glass-fronted sideboard containing delicate china tea sets, which the family decided to keep.
Garage & Garden Shed
The garage contained an assortment of old tools, a vintage Singer sewing machine, and a pair of brass fire dogs. The garden shed housed a collection of terracotta pots, a cast iron garden roller, and an antique wooden wheelbarrow, which was in surprisingly good condition.
