We were contacted by a family in Otterburn who needed a complete house clearance for a large country cottage that had been in their family for generations. The property had been unoccupied for several months, and the family required a professional clearance service to prepare it for sale. They wanted to ensure that any valuable antiques were identified, with the rest of the household contents either donated or responsibly disposed of.
Client’s Requirements
-
Full clearance of a four-bedroom cottage, including attic, garage, and outbuildings
-
Identification and valuation of any antiques or collectibles
-
Donation of usable furniture and household items to local charities
-
Clearance to be completed within two days due to tight deadlines
The House Clearance Process
Main House
The house was filled with furniture dating back to the early 20th century. In the lounge, we discovered a Georgian sideboard and a pair of Victorian armchairs, both of which the family opted to sell. The bedrooms contained solid oak wardrobes and dressing tables, which were still in good condition and donated to a local charity shop.
The attic had been used for storage over the years and contained old trunks, a collection of 1950s magazines, and a set of vintage railway posters. One of the posters was a rare North Eastern Railway advertisement, which we purchased from the family.
Kitchen & Dining Room
The kitchen was home to a farmhouse dining table and a Welsh dresser filled with decorative plates and tea sets. The family decided to keep a few sentimental pieces but allowed us to donate the rest. We also found a silver-plated tea set, which was appraised and sold.
Garage & Outbuildings
The garage contained an assortment of tools, garden equipment, and vintage oil lamps. One of the standout finds was an old cast-iron stove, which we arranged to sell on behalf of the family. The outbuildings had a collection of horse tack and equestrian gear from a bygone era, much of which was donated.
