We were recently contacted by a client in Stocksfield, a scenic village in Northumberland, to carry out a full house clearance. The property, a spacious detached home, had belonged to a retired professor who had lived there for decades. The family needed the house cleared efficiently, as they were preparing to put it on the market but were unsure what to do with the extensive collection of books, furniture, and personal belongings left behind.
Client’s Request
“My father’s house in Stocksfield needs to be fully cleared. There are a lot of books, furniture, and antiques, and we’d like to make sure anything valuable is identified. We also want as much as possible to be donated rather than going to waste.”
The House Clearance Process
Library & Study
One of the most remarkable aspects of this clearance was the home library, which contained over 2,000 books, many of them rare and antique editions. Among them, we discovered a collection of 19th-century leather-bound volumes on history and philosophy, as well as an early edition of The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin. These were carefully set aside for professional valuation, and the family was delighted to learn their worth.
The study also contained a vintage mahogany writing desk and an antique brass reading lamp, both of which were in excellent condition and were later sold to collectors.
Living Areas & Bedrooms
The living room featured traditional oak furniture, including a large dining table with matching chairs. While some of the pieces were well-worn, others were in excellent condition and were passed on to a local antique dealer.
The bedrooms contained a mixture of Victorian and mid-century furniture, including an elegant 1950s dressing table and a four-poster bed with intricate carvings. We also discovered a trunk filled with vintage clothing from the 1940s and 1950s, which was donated to a local charity shop specializing in period fashion.
Garage & Attic
The garage contained a variety of old tools, some of which were high-quality vintage brands that we identified as valuable. A 1920s wooden carpenter’s toolbox with hand-forged tools was particularly interesting and was later sold to a collector.
In the attic, we uncovered a box of silver-plated cutlery and a selection of old postcards from the early 1900s, which were set aside for the family.
