We were recently contacted by a family in Wooler, a charming market town on the edge of the Cheviot Hills, to assist with clearing a three-bedroom cottage. The property had belonged to an elderly couple who had lived there for over 50 years, and the family needed everything sorted, with valuable items identified and unwanted belongings removed efficiently.
Client’s Request
“We need the entire house cleared, including the garage and garden shed. There are a lot of antiques and collectibles, and we’d like to make sure anything of value is recognized. We also want usable furniture and clothing donated where possible.”
The House Clearance Process
Main Living Areas
The living room contained a mix of traditional and mid-century furniture, including a well-preserved oak sideboard, a set of Edwardian dining chairs, and a vintage Chesterfield sofa. The sideboard was in excellent condition and was sold to a local antiques dealer, while the chairs were donated to a charity that furnishes homes for families in need.
The bookshelves were filled with an eclectic mix of novels, history books, and local Wooler historical records, some of which dated back to the early 1900s. The family chose to keep these historical books, while the rest were donated to a second-hand bookshop.
Bedrooms & Personal Belongings
The bedrooms contained various vintage dressing tables, wooden wardrobes, and a beautiful Victorian washstand with an original marble top. We carefully sorted through personal belongings, setting aside sentimental items for the family, including a collection of old letters and photographs from the 1930s.
Garage & Shed
The garage and garden shed had been used for woodworking and gardening over the years, and we discovered a range of antique tools, including a hand-forged anvil, a set of old woodworking planes, and a vintage cast-iron bench. These items were later sold to collectors, and the family was pleased to learn their potential value.
